OVERVIEW
Given the history of Ducati and the amazing motorcycles they have created, it’s conceivable that at some point they might reach a zenith so far ahead of any other bike, that looking back nearly a decade later, experts will agree that something special had happened. That moment very well might have been in 2012 with the 1199 Panigale S – a motorcycle so advanced, so powerful, yet so ideally balanced for performance riding, that nothing else has since eclipsed it.
Steeped in Italian manufacturing history, the Ducati family produced a wide range of products before advancing to bicycles and eventually motorized bikes. The history of their offerings would fill entire books, so it’s best to focus on their more recent achievements, most spectacularly, the past twenty years as Ducati fused the finest in technology with performance engineering. No other bike more aptly delivers that fusion than the 1199 Panigale S.
Loaded with spectacular state of the art features that are both mechanically impressive and beautifully sculpted, each of the individual components are designed with weight savings in mind, from the lightweight forged wheels, semi-active electronically controlled suspension, lightweight carbon fiber body components, and of course, the 195hp 1199cc L-Twin Desmodromic engine with four valves per cylinder delivering power to the rear wheel via six-speed transmission. Amazing adjustable ABS braking with various settings and a range of driving modes further contribute to the powerful capabilities of this bike.
To get to this level Ducati designers and engineers were challenged to find 25 more hp and reduce weight by 10kg from their already impressive previously celebrated top line bike. Power, elegance, and agility were key goals in the design brief that Ducati achieved using monocoque technology combining many parts into one and using the Superquadro engine as a stressed member for the die-cast alloy chassis.
This design not only saved weight, it centralized vehicle mass to the front of the bike with the engine redesigned to allow more aggressive front end geometry and shift front and rear weight bias to a more favorable performance dynamic. The rear of the engine utilizes another die-cast element connecting the rear wheel via single-sided swing axle, saving weight, and once again contributing to favorable weight bias. The longer wheelbase, underside exhaust, magnesium subframe, and tightly packed electronics also contribute to the impressive agility both in highly competitive cornering and full throttle acceleration.
For added stability and control, preset ride modes and Twin Monobloc M50 caliper four-pot Brembo brakes includes ABS (Standard on the Panigale S) which modulate front-only activation in race or wet-ride modes. These nearly undetectable features optimize brake force distribution which yields impressive vehicle stability and rider confidence in mile after mile of astonishing performance. The ten spoke 3.5” front and 6.0” rear 17” forged Marchesini wheels are super lightweight featuring the widest rear tire ever built for a road-going Ducati. Precision line-holding and corner trajectory are maximized by Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tires derived from years of World Superbike competitions. All this adds up to impossibly high metrics of performance, stability, and rider/machine integrity that captures the very soul of Ducati motorcycles.
With the Tricolore livery, this superlative motorcycle is even more dramatic and exclusive, bearing the bold colors of the Italian flag. Every detail of the 1199 Panigale S offers unabashed tributes to the rich racing heritage behind the Ducati name. Everything about the design from the LED headlamps, exquisitely sculpted body panels, dynamically engineered frame and stress membered Superquadro engine to the impressive litany of first-rate technology including enhanced Ducati Data Analyzer (DDA+), Ducati Electronic Suspension (DES), Ducati Traction Control (DTC), Ducati Quick Shift (DQS), Engine Brake Control (EBC), full Ride by Wire (RbW), and Thin Film Transistor Instrumentation (TFT) make for an impressive vehicle with incredible rider stability and world-class performance.
This particular example is a spectacular original 1199 Panigale S sold new with factory original Tricolore livery. Having covered a mere 1,457 miles since new, the owner, an avid motorcycle enthusiast, has maintained and serviced this Ducati with the utmost care. As many motorsports enthusiasts will do, the owner selected several specially developed upgrades for this bike, all of which can be easily removed and returned to the original state should the new owner wish to do so - Racing ECU upgrade, exhaust, ASV levers, and a multitude of carbon fiber bits are among the highlights.
As one should expect with this example, the condition of this Ducati is nearly like new. Every aspect of the bike from the colorful bodywork, carbon fiber details, and refined mechanical features are polished, preserved, and properly maintained to factory specifications. The still original tires show minimal use while the brakes, disc surfaces, and drive chain are all in excellent condition.
This Ducati is accompanied by a factory owner’s manual, an unassembled Tamiya scale model kit of this bike still in the box, a spare seat, spare body pieces, and other original parts that were removed from the bike and upgraded per the original owner’s preference.
For anyone seeking a ground-breaking road-going bike steeped in racing history and built with the highest level of engineering and design, the Ducati 1199 Panigale S with Tricolore livery delivers on every promise of excellence, performance, and exclusivity.
