OVERVIEW
Recognized by automotive experts worldwide as one of the finest contemporary luxury-performance cars ever offered for public sale, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is a marvel of contemporary engineering and design. A decade after release, the sophisticated technology, bespoke interior, and phenomenal performance continues to impress ardent enthusiasts with its brute power and posed elegance. Inspired by the legendary million-dollar 300SL Gullwing, the Super Light Sport themes were supported by the very best of AMG and Mercedes-Benz for this partnership in performance. The SLS debuted at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show revealing the powerful 583 hp V8 engine alongside a mind-boggling array of premier features and state-of-the-art technology. As expected, the SLS AMG immediately received numerous design awards and distinctions upon release.
Crafted essentially by hand, the Magna Steyr aluminum chassis and body were individually prepared and outfitted per specific customer order including each engine, assembled by hand at AMG in Affalterbach, Germany. Offered initially for European markets, the SLS AMG became officially available for US delivery mid-year 2011, making the 2011 models the first of their kind to be available in North America. Rare by any measure, a mere 541 Coupes were built in the inaugural year of North American release.
Bespoke in every respect, the business end of performance lurks under the beautifully formed hood - the AMG M159 engine. Beginning with the M156 series block, the lightweight specially flow-ported magnesium intake, forged pistons, optimized exit-flow tubular headers, and dry sump oil system, all contribute to astonishing performance. The AMG Dual Clutch Semi-Automatic transmission with lightweight carbon fiber driveshaft and selectable driving modes includes a manual shift mode readily at your fingertips via steering wheel mounted actuation paddles. Giant four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with 6-piston aluminum front calipers and 4-piston aluminum rear calipers, deliver precise braking even under repeated applications.
0-60 mph times of 3.8 seconds and quarter mile times of 11.7 seconds at 125 mph still impress even today. Standard safety systems include an SLS exclusive 3-Stage Electronic Stability Program coupled to a unique rollover door-bolt ejection system allowing the distinctive gullwing doors to be separated from the car, facilitating safe exit of both passengers in the unlikely event of rollover. In addition to the lightweight material construction and race-bred engineering, all cars were outfitted with an AMG limited slip differential, forged dual wishbone suspension, Xenon headlamps, eight protective interior airbags, and a rearview camera.
Impressive as options for most top-tier cars, all SLS AMGs came standard with Parktronic, auto dimming and folding mirrors, dual zone climate control, heated power seats, iPod/MP3 Media Interface, and Enhanced Voice Control System. Today, enthusiasts are realizing more and more how impressive and capable these cars are. Low mile, highly optioned examples such as this are becoming harder and harder to find, and rightly so. The quality, performance, and unprecedented technical features make the SLS AMG a contemporary dream that can be enjoyed for years to come.
This SLS AMG was sold to the first owner on May 27, 2010, through Chapman Mercedes-Benz, Tucson, AZ. The first owner retained car in Arizona with regular Mercedes-Benz dealer services in Scottsdale, AZ including oil changes, emissions inspections, and battery replacement (2018). In November 2019, the second owner purchased the car. At that time, 5,107 miles were noted when the title was transferred to the second owner. The digital odometer currently indicates 5,880 miles.
Finished in gorgeous Alubeam Silver exterior paint (itself a $12,750 option) with Classic Red/Black “Designo” Exclusive Leather, additional cost-added factory options ordered on this car include:
H73 - Carbon Fiber Trim
486 - AMG Performance Suspension System
766 - 19”/20” AMG 10 Spoke Forged Light Alloy Wheels
811 - Bang & Olufsen 1000-watt Sound System
Every aspect of the exterior condition of this SLS AMG is beautiful, refined, and exceptionally well-presented. The rare Alubeam silver metallic paint presents like new, reflecting quality care since new. All glass, crystal clear lighting and lenses, and exterior body trim are in excellent cosmetic condition. The doors, hood, and trunk open with ease and exhibit precision closure. The gullwing doors open with an enchanting upward motion inviting occupants to gently glide in over the protective entry sills, much like the 300SL Gullwing offered more than 70 years ago. The optional 19” and 20” AMG Light Forged Alloy wheels and low-profile Continental ContiSport performance tires deliver an impressive statement of power and grace. AMG branded calipers with drilled and slotted discs confidently flank the side scoops which complete the impressive exterior. The rear of the car features dual exhaust ports and a flush fitting retractable rear spoiler which dynamically adjusts to maximize rear downforce.
The interior features soft, factory fresh, two-tone red and black Designo leather which has been properly maintained and preserved, offering premier finishes throughout. The sculpted dash, console, and seats are both visually captivating and ergonomically designed for occupant comfort. Power adjustments accommodate a range of driver while switches, climate, and audio controls are very well laid out. Selective paddle switchgear levers deliver fingertip access control to the 7-speed transmission, directly behind the steering wheel. Impressively, the interior delivers a rare blend of design and elegance without presenting an overwhelming number of features or distractions. The dashboard and controls achieve a balance of performance and grace rarely seen in such a potent performance car.
Under the hood, the 6.3 Liter hand-built AMG engine has been properly maintained and detailed to a high standard. Here too the visual delight continues to impress as much as the exterior and interior design. Even the smallest details have received attention and care in execution, followed by careful service and maintenance by previous and current owners. Factory components, manufacturers engine compartment labels, and hardware appear as new.
Entering through the gullwing doors, the interior envelopes you in beauty and power unlike any other car. The dynamic entry of the doors, leather interior, and presence of Mercedes-Benz/AMG history are beautifully captured at the moment of ignition. The engine comes to life with the press of a switch. The engine delivers a deep mellow performance note to the exhaust signaling nearly 600 hp on tap. The top of the line $6,400.00 optional Bang and Olufsen sound system can be readily enjoyed, though the sonorous sounds of the engine at speed is equally engaging. Unlike many unwieldy, often demanding high-performance cars, the SLS AMG is provocative, engaging, and perfectly at home in city traffic or when pushed into Autobahn territory. This beautiful Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is accompanied by a set of factory manuals with factory leather pouch, gloves, factory first-aid kit, portable air-compressor, a copy of the factory window sticker, and two keys.
A rare and superbly crafted performance vehicle, this Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is sure to capture the heart of an enthusiast who enjoys luxury, elegance, unbelievable performance, and highway touring at the wheel of a truly refined legend of motoring excellence.
