OVERVIEW

The Ford Escort RS Cosworth was Ford of Europe’s answer to creating a competitive Grp A rally contender. Based on a shortened AWD Ford Sierra floorpan, they mated it to the “new” Escort bodyshell. However, no panels are really interchangeable with the standard Escort. Flared fender, large wings, scoops, and vents all designed with the goal of homologation for Grp A helped distinguish the car’s silhouette.

For that homologation to be awarded FIA regulations required 5,000 examples to be built. The Escort Cosworth was a successful road car, and Ford ended up producing just over 7,000 before the end of production in 1996.

This 1993 Ford Escort Cosworth RS is presented in Mallard Green and is an early “Big Turbo” example. The car is showing 33,000 KM on the odometer, however the true mileage is unknown (TMU). The Escort was imported to the USA from Sweden in 2020. It has been further modified in all areas – engine, suspension, brakes, and even the interior.

The paint is a full exterior respray in the factory shade of Mallard Green, and presents with driver level cosmetics on all panels. The exterior has further been revised with the ubiquitous Morette twin headlamps, a new front lower spoiler, and clear lights up front instead of the factory amber units.

The engine is the heart of any Escort Cosworth, especially in the desirable Big Turbo specification. This car was taken down to the block and completed a full build up in the search for more power. The following are the provided build details of the relatively fresh engine:

  • Completely machined and blue printed engine crank shaft, Weighted original engine rods, New Clevite crank bearings and new original rod bearings, Group A Mahle pistons compression 8,0:1, New ARP bolts, new oil pump in aluminum with high pressure kit, Vibra Tech engine mounts, RS 500 intercooler

  • Top End - BD 14 intake cam, Blasted valves, New bronze valve guides, Machined valve seats, Planed head, Double valve springs, Vented intake with PPF plenum and Audi S2 80 mm throttle body, PPF manifold with Garret GT30BB double ball bearing turbo, Group A engine gasket, Group A camshaft belt, Cometic valve cover gasket, Kentcams adjustable sprockets

  • Fuel System - Delphi low Ohm 788cc injectors, Walbro 225 liter/hour fuel pump, Erls high flow fuel filter on the fuel rail, 10 mm fuel lines

  • Exhaust – PPF Extractor Manifold, 100 cell race catalyst, 3” Mongoose system

  • ECU – Stock Weber Marelli, 3 bar MAP sensor, engine mapping by Trendab in Sweden.

Dyno sheets in the build file from October 2019 in Sweden show 284 hp at the wheels, and 363 hp at the crank. Torque shows to be 420 Nm at the crank, and it is putting down 328 Nm at the wheels. The power is transmitted to all four wheels via a stock MT75 transmission. There is a short shift kit installed, making for very short and direct gear changes underhand with the aftermarket shift knob. The clutch is a sintered disc with a reinforced pressure plate.

The entire braking system on the car has been upgraded – new metal lines throughout, and the original master cylinder and booster have been replaced two Girling cylinders with brake bias adjustability. Braking duties are handled by stock units out back with EBC pads, and giant front brakes by D2 with 8-piston calipers. The pedal effort is race car stiff – works great, but you have to be in the mood and mindset when piloting this car!

The suspension is comprised of H&R coilovers and polyurethane bushings – they are a wonderful modern mix of compliant, yet tight in all of our test driving of the car. There is a front strut tie-bar to further stiffen the geometry. Brand new Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires are fitted over the new 18”x8” Compomotive TH wheels.

Sporting a very rare and desirable factory “Red Hex Cloth” stock interior, it is further augmented by a Momo Alcantara wheel with red stitching. The interior has a few cracks on the dash face, and is missing the factory clock.

This Escort Cosworth RS was imported to the USA from Sweden in early 2020 and has a clean and clear WA title. Includes factory owner’s manuals in the Ford jacket, and an extensive documentation folder from ownership in Sweden back to 2001.
