OVERVIEW
Ask nearly any motorcycle enthusiast to describe their ultimate sport bike and nearly every enthusiast will respond “Ducati”. Having built some of the most amazing performance motorcycles in the world with a wide range of uses, Ducati today continues to provide both artistry and engineering of premier quality. And while there are many models over the years that set a high-water mark for racing and superlative performance, the SP2 was something so special that more than 30 years later, it is still revered as one of the most important high-performance motorcycles of the century.
Steeped in Italian manufacturing history, the Ducati family evolved their manufacturing to include high tech machining and race-proven engineering to deliver not just fast motorcycles, but beautifully balanced and artfully designed performance machines capable of winning in a wide range of venues including first place in the 1991 and 1992 World Superbike Championships riding the Ducati SP2.
Shortly after the initial development of the Ducati 851 Strada, improvements steadily continued until the 851 became the fastest machine Ducati had ever designed. Impressive as that was, in 1990, the homologated Ducati SP2 would benefit from a bored out 851cc engine to 888 cc which they produced in limited numbers. Completing fewer than 500 by the close of series manufacturing at the end of 1991, the SP2 went on to become one of the most sought after Ducatis of the 20th century. The resultant rarity and collector enthusiasm for the homologated SP2 has launched the original variants into stratospheric prices, somewhat defeating the purpose of their original intent – to go fast, win races, and deliver unbelievable road-going adventure for capable riders.
To meet the same goals of the original build, the former owner of this Ducati 851 set about configuring this example to SP2 level specifications. The results were impressive enough to win the heart of the current owner who purchased this bike and then took it to yet a higher level of detail adding finely selected items that only experts familiar with factory original SP2 configured bikes might be able to recognize. The result is not only a superlative tribute to the SP2 but a bike that can be confidently ridden on modern roads and shown with pride at any major concours event.
Everything about the design from the beautifully formed aerodynamically engineered body panels to the impressive 93hp engine presents in beautiful harmony not only as a performance machine but simply as a mechanical work of art. The massive brakes, detailed suspension, twin Ferracci exhaust, and compact single seat, all fulfill the racing heritage of the SP2. Not only are the details and features consistent with the SP2, this bike also has the rare distinction of an original SP2 number plate, bearing the number 394 beneath the instrument cluster just as an original SP2 was given for homologation. The original 851 triple tree comes with the bike as well.
Visually, the overall condition of this Ducati beguiles the 30 years since original construction. Essentially every detail of this machine from the lightweight bodywork, front and rear aluminum subrame, OEM Ducati tail section, machined details, and refined mechanical features are beautifully polished, honed, and properly maintained to factory specifications. The tires, massive Brembo brake calipers, drilled disc brake surfaces, and drive chain are all in excellent condition. The engine fires off brilliantly with crisp throttle response, fantastic exhaust note, and blistering acceleration even on mild throttle. Every aspect of this SP2 tribute confirms the magic and iconic status of these original race-bred bikes.
This Ducati is accompanied by a factory owner’s manual, service manual, original tail secton and subrame and a support stand dolly for the rear wheel. Featuring fresh fluids throughout, and less than 50 miles on the cam belts, it a true museum piece, or ready to ride this weekend as desired.
For anyone seeking a beautifully configured road bike, built to honor the finest in racing history, assembled and maintained to the highest enthusiasts standards, this Ducati 851 SP2 Tribute is ready to deliver on the Italian glory of motorsports racing at the touch of your fingertips.
