OVERVIEW
Having owned Porsche hot rods in the past, this car immediately caught our attention. The combination of a bigger motor in a light weight early car is a recipe that never goes out of style.
Presented in Albert Blue over a black and houndstooth RS style interior, the car presents very well in person. Built with an eye towards the sports purpose look, the finished result brings it all together with a handsome cohesion. And not to worry, the powerplant backs up the good looks.
We all know the story, whether it is our own story, or a fellow gearhead – “I love the car, but I wish it had a little more power.” – and thus the slippery slope begins. What began as a power upgrade, quickly snowballed into a full restoration and buildup of an already great early 911.
All of the work was commissioned under the current ownership which dates back to 2006. Rothsport Racing of Sherwood, Oregon was enlisted for the project in 2008. Rothsport handled the engine build, transmission, and assembly of the car after it was sent out for paint.
Starting with the mechanicals in early 2008, Rothsport began with a fresh 7R case to build the RS spec MFI 2.7L engine with all new internals. Everything was addressed from the MFI pump being rebuilt to RS spec, to the 911S cams, bearings, pistons, newer Carrera tensioners, and topped off with the red fan shroud and all new hardware for the cosmetics.
A passenger front fender Carrera oil cooler was added with external hard oil lines to keep temperatures in check. Stainless SSI headers/heat exchanges were specified as well during the build up for heat and proper sound and power. A Dansk 2 in 1 out muffler was installed to keep things understated (and complementing the “2.4” badge that was left on the engine lid!). Dyno tuned and then installed, the motor is a very healthy example of the venerable 2.7L MFI RS engine.
Utilizing the stock 915 transmission case, Rothsport specified a set of custom ratio Guard gears for 2nd through 5th, to match the engine powerband. Fully rebuilt with new gears, synchros, shift guides, and sleeves, the transmission is a delight to use, and mates very well with the driving experience.
Suspension is comprised of 21/26 torsion bars, 18mm sway bars front and rear, Bilstein shocks, and Turbo tie-rods. Braking duty handled by new SC calipers and rotors front and rear with Mintex pads. Wheels are refinished 15” Fuchs - 6” wide up front and 7” (Weidman weld up 7Rs) at the back with 205/60-15 tires all around.
The car was treated to a full color change paint job in late 2008 to Porsche’s lovely Albert Blue. The paint shows extremely well in person, with only a few minor rock chips on the exterior. All rubber and felt was replaced, trim was polished or replaced, and Sekurit glass appears in all locations other than the front windshield. New headlights, taillights and turn signals were all added during reassembly.
Following the paint job, a full new interior was fitted. New headliner, RS carpet (rear seat delete), RS door panels, and fixed back Vintage Seats brand 911R sport seats covered in perforated black leather and houndstooth fabric. Rounding out the interior, a Momo Heritage Prototipo steering wheel has been fitted along with a radio delete blocking plate.
This car is the epitome of a clean and well thought out narrow body early 911 hot rod to enjoy on any given weekend run. This 1973 911T Hot Rod is offered with factory tool kit, jack, spare wheel/tire, Porsche COA, and records back to 2006.
