OVERVIEW
“Ford did not have to make this car.” – I cannot count the number of times I have uttered that statement. They really did not. But yet they made it. Ford wanted to celebrate their 100 anniversary and they did it with one of the most iconic cars from their history – the Ford GT40.
The original Ford GT40 was an impressive race car. Full stop. It debuted in 1964 and while there were some development pains in 1964 and 1965, there was no doubt that Ford and the GT40 dominated the 1966 season. They swept the podium with a 1-2-3 finish at the 24 Hours of Daytona, 12 Hours of Sebring, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The GT40 went on to win Le Mans outright again in 1967, 1968, and 1969. Ford had cemented the GT40 in motorsports history.
Ford began design work on the Ford GT (the name was changed from GT40 due to licensing issues, plus the car had now exceeded the original car’s famous 40” height) and debuted a prototype at the 2002 Detroit Auto Show. In 2003 (Ford’s Centennial celebration year), Ford shared three more prototypes around the globe, and marched forward to deliver the first cars in late 2004, as 2005 model year cars. Ford went on to manufacture 4,038 examples of the Ford GT in 2005 and 2006 before ceasing production.
When you open up the rear clamshell hood, you are struck by the engineering and pure race car design. Visually similar to the GT40 in terms of layout, the modern interpretation uses every conceivable material for strength and light weight – aluminum, carbon fiber, and magnesium all make an appearance. Weighing just over 3,400 pounds, the Ford GT is a wonderful display of lightweight engineering in a tight envelope – and then a healthy dose of horsepower to make sure the performance is adequate.
No stability control. No traction control. Ford chose to produce a supercar with none of the electronic nannies that are so prevalent in other supercars. This car requires respect and focus when driving it. Producing 550hp from the supercharged 5.4L V8, the Ford GT does 0-60 in 3.4 seconds, and rips off a 11.5 second quarter mile at 128mph, while breaking over 200mph on the top end.
This 2005 Ford GT was ordered with all four of the available options:
Lightweight BBS Forged Wheels
Painted Brake Calipers in Red
Painted Racing Stripes
McIntosh Stereo System
Having covered now just under 8,100 miles, it also has benefitted from the use and service that many of the ultra-low mileage cars do not. Recent work includes fresh tires, alignment, clutch, battery, rear toe links, brake fluid all serviced in May/June 2019.
Ford did not have to make this car. And yet they did. Thank you to Ford for making the world just a little better for car enthusiasts.
