OVERVIEW
The Ford Escort RS Cosworth was Ford of Europe’s answer to creating a competitive Grp A rally contender. Based on a shortened AWD Ford Sierra floorpan, they mated it to the “new” Escort bodyshell. However, no panels are really interchangeable with the standard Escort. Flared fender, large wings, scoops, and vents all designed with the goal of homologation for Grp A helped distinguish the car’s silhouette.
For that homologation to be awarded FIA regulations required 5,000 examples to be built. The Escort Cosworth was a successful road car, and Ford ended up producing over 7,000 before the end of production in 1996.
This 1993 Ford Escort Cosworth RS is presented in Radiant Red and is an early “Big Turbo” example. Built in December of 1992, the car is showing 89,000 KM on the odometer, and was imported from Sweden in 2018. It has been further modified in all areas – engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, and even the interior.
The paint remains original on all steel panels (verified by paint meter) other than the driver’s side door and rear quarter. Additionally, the engine bay and hood were repainted with the engine was removed for modifications. The exterior has further been revised with Morette twin headlamps, a carbon fiber front spoiler, and smoked taillights.
The engine is the heart of any Escort Cosworth, especially in the desirable Big Turbo specification. This car was taken down to the block and completed a full build up in the search for more power. The following are the provided build details:
CP pistons, H profile connecting rods, Cosworth rod bearings, Cooper piston rings, ARP bolts, High pressure oil pump
Top End - New valves, guides, springs, hydraulic lifts, original camshafts
Custom exhaust manifold, Turbo GTX 3076 Gen 2, HKS 50mm wastegate
Custom intake plenum from TG racing in Sweden, Bosch 1300 injectors Motorsport version, RS 500 intercooler and cooler
Twin Walbro 342 fuel pumps in the gas tank
The engine is controlled with an aftermarket ECU (MaxxECU from Sweden). There are some limitations with the original Weber Marelli ECU, so it is not uncommon to look to a modern engine control unit. The car runs two programs (and has ability to run a third), switchable from 1.0bar or 1.5bar, accessible via a tablet mounted in the dash, with full readout on engine vitals – water, oil, EGT, boost, fuel pressure, etc. The tablet is not required to be powered on for the car to operate.
The power is transmitted to all four wheels via a stock MT75 transmission, however the gears have been upgraded to straight cut profile (Fixit brand from England) to handle the power output. There is a short shift kit installed as well making for very short and direct gear changes underhand with the aftermarket shift knob.
The suspension is comprised of Bilstein custom valved coilovers – they are a wonderful modern mix of compliant, yet tight in all of our test driving of the car. Braking duties are handled by stock units out back, and giant front brakes with 6 piston calipers. Brand new Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires are fitted over the new 18”x9” wheels.
Sporting a factory grey “Hex Cloth” stock interior (rear seat and door panels), it is further augmented by Sparco aftermarket front cloth seats and a Sparco steering wheel. A set of black/red trimmed floor mats are included as well.
This Escort Cosworth RS was imported to the USA from Sweden in early 2018 and has a clean and clear WA title in hand.
