OVERVIEW

For more than seven decades Porsche has designed and engineered exceptional sports cars. The iconic and enduring 911 continues to engage generations of collectors and enthusiasts aspiring to each uniquely outfitted offering. A highlight of these iterations, the Porsche 930 Turbo, dominates the decades as the one of the premier sports cars for both enthusiasts and collectors. Capable of eye-watering performance even by today’s standards, at inception the Porsche 930 Turbo set both top speed and acceleration records, and inspired legions of enthusiasts to declare it the ultimate performance road car – a statement that continues today.

As if the 930 Turbo wasn’t already outrageous enough, Porsche took it one step further combining motorsports influenced engineering and advanced body design with the launch of the ‘Flachbau’ or ‘Slant Nose’ body package. Initially developed to conform to Le Mans body design requirements for 935 racecars, these Le Mans winning cars captured the hearts and aspirations of 930 owners seeking this unique look for their road cars. Aftermarket tuners produced their own versions of this bodywork for standard production street 930 Turbos, but the quality of these conversions fell short of factory excellence, with most body kits completed in fiberglass instead of steel. Porsche, never one to miss a market opportunity, prepared to deliver its own Slant Nose variant for road cars in 1981. The first-generation models were available through special order Sonderwunsch (‘special wish’), but by the mid 1980s, the Slant Nose factory M505 was made available as a $29,555.00 option. This package featured aerodynamic flat front fenders with functional venting and pop-up headlamps, blended wider rocker panels, and functional rear vents installed in the wide rear fenders. The already substantial price tag of the standard 930 Turbo with Special Wish features resulted in a sizable purchase for a factory-built Slant Nose car – a purchase that very few customers were daring enough to select.

Bold and rare by any measure, most Porsche experts divide this production series into three generations. The first-generation factory cars were assembled with fiberglass body features and more blunt construction which resulted in very few builds. The second-generation examples (still offered exclusively by special wish order) were more refined with pop-up head lights and steel body work. Considered the most desirable of the Slant Nose series, just 34 of the 204 examples produced from 1983-1987 were built in 1984.

Of the 34 built in 1984, it is believed that a handful were ordered from the factory finished in a “Paint to Sample” special order color. Contributing further to the rarity of this example, it is also distinguished by factory built non-louvered steel front fenders - indicative of the earliest first-generation design. Already an expensive car, essentially hand built to owner specifications, this example was delivered new to Hawaiian Tropic founder Ron Rice. The factory order codes displayed on the underside of the front storage lid and further confirmed by the Porsche Classic Technical Certificate indicate the following options:

  • 999 – Paint to Sample

  • 058 – Bumpers with impact absorption

  • 220 – Locking differential (40%)

  • 261 – Passenger side mirror electric

  • 409 – Sport Seats left and right, leather

  • 469 – Black roofliner

  • 559 – Air conditioner

  • 650 – Sunroof

The Porsche Classic Technical Certificate confirms these special wish features:

  • Slant Nose conversion w/Folding Headlights

  • Side Sill Panels L/R

  • Front Apron w/middle oil cooler

  • Air intake slots in rear side panels L/R

Having become the largest private sun tanning lotion company in the world, Hawaiian Tropic founder Ron Rice could have selected any car to represent his vast wealth, yet he not only purchased this car new, but he also retained it as his personal vehicle for nearly 30 years, proudly wearing the personalized Florida state license plate “1-TROPIC”.

In 2013, the current owner purchased this car directly from Ron Rice and embarked on a cost-no-object professional restoration performed by Porsche experts at Kennedy Motorsport, Inc., Holly Hill, FL. Beginning in 2014 and concluding in 2017 the restoration covered every aspect of the car including a meticulous bare metal glass out repaint matched to the original Paint to Sample color, Fuchs wheel restoration, upholstery, carpeting, engine rebuild, suspension, brakes, and all hydraulic systems restored to new. In each case careful attention was given to preserve original components, employing restorative processes and protective finishes to maintain as many of the original features as possible. In April 2024 with 47,740 miles, the car was serviced by German Tech including the installation of two new fuel pumps, new pump relays, new fuel filter and draining and replenishing all fluids including non-ethanol fuel.

This car was reviewed in July 2024 by Porsche Classic and awarded a Porsche Classic Technical Certificate stating that this is a factory correct 930 Slant Nose with both the engine and transmission confirmed to be original to the car bearing the correct factory stampings consistent with Porsche factory records.

With just 47,774 miles indicated, this factory-built Slant Nose Porsche 930 presents in superb condition throughout. The Paint to Sample Brilliant Red Metallic finish applied over the metal factory body panels is glossy and smooth delivering a memorable visual impact. The rubber and various black trim are in excellent condition, including the lower front valance edge which is correctly aligned. The stance is perfectly positioned on desirable 7 and 9-inch Fuchs wheels, which feature matching recessed satin black, accented by polished aluminum petals and rims. The glass, lenses, black window trim, and lights are in excellent condition. The 930 rear spoiler is in excellent condition including the black rubber trim surrounding the air intake.

The black leather interior is in superb condition. The leather seats show minimal use, while the rear seating area appears essentially unused, with smoothly hinging rear seatbacks showing excellent finishes both front and back. Ron Rice’s PCA-issued brass plaque is still affixed to the glove box door.

This Porsche 930 Slant Nose presents as a rare opportunity to acquire a unique low-mileage, two-owner, factory Special Wishes Porsche 930 Slant Nose with just two owners from new, matching numbers, and a superlative restoration. Rarely does a car come along with as many virtues as this example offers. One of just 34 Slant Nose Porsches built in 1984, this 930 Turbo is both powerful and captivating, offering rarity and provenance virtually guaranteeing desirability for generations of enthusiast who will continue to seek out the very best in Porsche design and engineering for decades to come.
