OVERVIEW
In the pantheon of great sports cars, few rise above the best, fewer still become iconic. And while Porsche has made a great deal of significant cars over the past 75 years, the 911, spanning 60 years of unrivaled production, continues to captivate collectors and enthusiasts. The most amazing of these iterations still reigns as one of the all-time greats; the Porsche 930 Turbo. Capable of phenomenal performance even by today’s standards, the Porsche 930 Turbo set numerous street and track records, inspiring generations of enthusiasts to continually seek out the very best examples of these iconic cars.
As amazing as the 930 was, there was one more level of rarity only a select few could afford. Inspired by the radical 935 race cars, the ‘Flachbau’ or ‘Slant Nose’ concept was originally captured by aftermarket tuners producing their own versions of this bodywork for standard production street 930 Turbos. Quality of these conversions varied tremendously, primarily offered as fiberglass kits. In 1981, noting the public enthusiasm for this body design, Porsche elected to offer a factory version of this bodywork for road cars, exclusively by special order Sonderwunsch (‘special wish’). By 1988, the Slant Nose factory M505 option was priced at an astonishing $24,000.00. M505 featured aerodynamic flat front fenders with functional louvers and pop-up headlamps, wider rocker panels blended into the body, and functional rear vents installed into the wide rear fenders. The already substantial $85,000 price tag for the base 930 Turbo resulted in a jaw-dropping $110,000.00 price tag for a factory slant nose car. Rarely ordered due to the cost, just 112 factory-built M505 optioned slant nose 930 turbo Cabriolets were produced in 1988.
Rare by any distinction, it is even more impressive to find a two-owner original example in such excellent condition. This Porsche is a genuine factory-built Slant Nose (option code 505 stamped inside the factory owner’s manual and on the car). In addition to the original owner’s manual, option code sticker, window sticker, and the original option code sticker on the underside of the hood, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity further validates this factory original 930 Slant Nose Cabriolet. Sold new to the first owner in October 1987, they opted for European Tourist delivery as part of their purchase. After delivery, the owner enjoyed the car for sixteen years, documenting accumulated miles in the warranty book with services in Western Washington. The second and current owner purchased the car in 2004.
According to the factory stamped codes, Porsche CoA, and window sticker, this car was delivered with the following options:
US Standard Emissions
Tonneau Cover
Heated Seats L/R
Blaupunkt Radio ‘Reno’
Electric Cabriolet Top
Limited Slip Differential
Slant Nose
Lumbar Support L/R
Alarm System
Luggage Compartment Black Velour
Goodyear Tires
In addition to the options records and Porsche CoA, the owner’s manual contains numerous dealer service entries logging mileage and service, further confirmed by both the current Carfax, and retained ownership records. These important records document the chronological progression of 97,000 miles, accumulated from the first owner to the second and current owner, as displayed on the six-digit odometer. Importantly, the rarity, documentation, and two-owner history are further validated by the matching numbers engine and gearbox. Always maintained under current and original ownership, a comprehensive engine-out service and new clutch installation were performed in February 2024, approximately 250 miles ago.
Today this remarkably original Porsche appears in exceptionally fine condition displaying what is believed to be the original Guards Red paint applied over original factory body panels. Digital paint metering throughout the entire car indicates the hood face was refinished for cosmetic reasons while under first ownership (underside paint is original and stickers in place). There are no notable paint imperfections to otherwise detract from the captivating color and impressive reflections in the finish of this exceptional 930 Slant Nose Cabriolet.
In addition to the impressive finish, the factory rubber and black trim are excellent throughout. The stance is perfectly positioned on desirable 7- and 9-inch Fuchs wheels, which have been recently refinished in factory correct satin black with polished aluminum rims. A set of Pirelli Cinturato P7 radial tires were mounted in preparation for sale. The glass, lenses, and lights are also in excellent condition with the side and vent glass bearing factory original brand etching. The power convertible top is in beautiful condition with hardly any evidence of use, raising and lowering smoothly under power from a small dash mounted switch. The clear rear plastic window is in amazing condition and properly folds into the rear pocket and the top cover fits snugly in place. The car has been stored with the top up – always.
The beautiful and supple black leather interior is soft and void of any notable marks. The driver’s seat bolsters have lightly relaxed over time, as typically found on cars of this era. The interior condition is remarkable for material continuity, preservation, and cleanliness. The rear seating area appears essentially new with no sun damage or dryness, often seen on even low mile cabriolets that have been displayed outdoors. The hinged rear seatbacks move smoothly, showing excellent finishes both on the leather and carpeted surfaces. The center console houses the factory original 4-speed manual gearshift with black leather shifter boot and an array of switches. A contemporary Pioneer stereo unit is installed (original radio included). The black-dial instruments, orange needles, and analog controls are in excellent condition, once again showing virtually no evidence of fading due to long-term sun exposure. The carpets are in very good condition, protected by a set of Turbo branded floor mats, very much in keeping with the preservation grade finishes throughout the interior.
The engine compartment is original, has been regularly serviced and remains unmodified from factory stock - a welcome result considering so many of these cars have suffered significant modifications. The original matching numbers engine and engine compartment are exceptionally clean, authentic, and properly preserved. Decals, wiring, hoses, and rare factory finishes are impressive particularly considering the traveled miles and 36 years of documented history.
The trunk is stock in appearance with excellent carpeting lining the front storage area, housing a factory correct red rim space-saver spare tire, factory paint sticker, and authentic original materials and finishes. The chassis displays finishes that have sympathetically aged, forming an honest patina. Originality and preservation are supported by the original factory overspray application, correct metal finishes displaying warmly heated coloring, and correct casting numbers, all of which are consistent with two-owner preservation and careful use.
This Porsche starts and runs with confidence. On the road, progressive acceleration is easily on tap in all gears. When on boost, the performance instantly impresses as acceleration comes on when commanded yet remains very usable even in moderate traffic. The chassis, steering, and suspension are tight and composed, and the brakes respond symmetrically with a firm pedal coming down from highway speeds. The gearbox linkage works very well, benefiting from the new clutch installed this year. The responsive chassis and powerful turbocharged engine make for an iconic and engaging driving experience, one that even the most experienced performance-car drivers will find captivating. This 930 Turbo Slant Nose comes with the original complete owner’s book set and pouch, air compressor, Porsche CoA, service records, original Tourist Delivery booklet, the original Blaupunkt radio, a Monogram scale model of this car, a factory slant nose Porsche Bra, top boot cover, tonneau cover, two-binder Porsche Workshop Manual, service records binder, and a copy of the original window sticker.
This is a rare opportunity to acquire a preserved, documented, factory Porsche 930 Slant Nose Cabriolet. 930s of all types have appreciated rapidly in recent years, but the desirable Slant Nose Cabriolet remains one of the most sought-after examples of these iconic cars. One of only 112 built this year, this numbers matching cabriolet turbo represents a unique opportunity for a Porsche enthusiast looking to acquire a preserved original example that can be driven with confidence, displayed at Porsche Concours events, or simply enjoyed as one of the most impressive sports cars ever built.
