1966 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 MkIII

One owner. Let that sink in. 55 years with the same home, from new. Used, loved, and used some more. Stories for days, and miles of adventure.

This story is less and less common as the years go by -- Many of us own cars for just a few years, or maybe even 10-15 years, but it gets to be thin air for 20, 30, 40+ years of ownership. Cars like this become a family member - countless stories of road trips, first dates, weddings, kids, and more.

This is the final iteration of the 3000, with the biggest 6 cylinder engine. If you have never driven one, you will be impressed with the torque and overall tractability of the engine, plus the relaxed pace with the overdrive on the highway. What a glorious thing to enjoy on a summer evening.

Today enthusiasts continue to seek enjoyable driver-level examples of these cars for their engaging road manners and ease of use. And while many of these later series cars have been the subject of detailed restorations for concours events, it is all the more refreshing to find a proper original-owner British Racing Green example that has been genuinely enjoyed and driven with just the right amount of care and appreciation, without the pretense, fussiness, or need for perfection

This particular example was ordered new by a Vietnam Weapons Officer on a US 7th Fleet destroyer, USS Bausell, who had just earned combat pay operating in the South China Sea. Granted an R/R with a visit to Hong Kong, the owner and three fellow officers decided to make their purchases that day. Two officers each chose Morgans, one a Land Rover, and, appreciative of the roll-up windows and six-cylinder engine in the Healey, our adventurous officer stepped up to order this 3000 MK III...and the story began....for the next 55 years!
