OVERVIEW

Originally conceived by Carroll Shelby in conjunction with Ford Motor Company in 1965, the Shelby GT 350 and eventually the larger engine GT500 delivered big power to the growing muscle-car era. Legend has it that Shelby got wind of Chevrolet possibly using the song “King of the Road” for an ad campaign, so he quickly ushered in a “KR” series GT500, beating Chevy to the punch. The King of the Road legend continued in 2008 with the 40th year celebration model and return of the GT500KR as a top-of-the-line Mustang package.

The “King” arrived with a host of special features unique to the KR model including a lightweight carbon fiber hood designed with dual exterior hood pins to emulate the 1968 version including functional scoops leading into an open air-filter system. The hood also reflected the 1968 design with rear mounted louvers to exhaust engine heat. Under the hood, the supercharged 5.4-liter engine delivered a whopping 540 hp though 3.5” baffled stainless-steel x-pipe dual exhaust. Getting all that power to the rear wheels ran through a Tremec 6-speed short throw manual transmission and 3.73 Limited Slip differential, spinning 18” x 9.5” wheels with high-performance tires.

Delivered new to the first owner in Port Angeles, WA, this car was optioned with Sirius Satellite Radio, HID headlamps, Shelby GT500KR package, DVD based navigation system, GT500 premium package trim, and ambient lighting. The car was also ordered with the rear spoiler delete, tape stripe delete, over the top stripe delete, and 3.73 ratio limited slip axle. The first owner retained the car until 2010 when it was sold through Tom Denchel Ford with 7,000 miles. The second owner, also a resident of Western Washington, purchased the car and has serviced and maintained the car regularly including an oil and filter change performed February 2023. A current Carfax confirms two owners, no accidents, and interval services as needed.

Today this legendary Shelby presents beautifully in gleaming Black paint delivering a fierce presence and stealthy appearance. The finish is in great condition showing only light chips on the lower grille and front area. The car retains the original factory paint except for the front bumper which was repainted for cosmetic reasons only. All glass, clear front and rear lenses, and exterior body trim are in excellent cosmetic condition. The doors, hood, and trunk operate smoothly displaying factory panel gaps and factory fit to the front and rear bumpers. The Shelby logos are in excellent condition including exclusive 40th anniversary Shelby side emblems. The 18” SVT Shelby wheels are in excellent condition sporting a set of Michelin Pilot tires. Dual stainless exhaust completes the Shelby treatment offering what most onlookers are likely to see when on the road, the vanishing rear view.

Inside the car, the black interior exhibits near new finishes throughout showing excellent surface finishes particularly to the sport bucket seats accented with embossed Cobra logos. All interior components have been beautifully maintained including the light-toned multi-gauge dashboard with supercharger boost gauge, center screen DVD navigation, and 6-speed manual shifter. The interior is all business but with appointments suitable for the King of the Road, including air-conditioning, Shaker 500 Audio System with CD player and MP3, power windows, and other comfort features.

Under the hood, the powerful 5.4 Liter supercharged V8 offers amazing and durable performance. The engine has been properly maintained under two owners with interval services and documented miles. Every factory component, trim piece, and manufacturer’s engine compartment sticker remain in place in excellent cosmetic condition. The undercarriage of the car further supports the documented low miles showing no significant road marks on the factory components, consistent with the accident-free Carfax.

Driving this Shelby, one is immediately reminded of how much performance has evolved since heavy-handed muscle cars built half a century ago. Power is progressive with a sweeping torque curve and delightful throttle response, and fantastic brakes. Even for seasoned drivers, ear-to-ear grins erupt not just on straight line acceleration but also when carving mountain roads. Highway cruising is light years ahead of former muscle cars offering refreshing AC, easy to use controls, an enjoyable sound system, and the added pleasure of knowing you are “King of the Road” driving one of the most revered examples of performance history.

This Shelby GT500KR is accompanied by a set of factory manuals with factory leather case and service invoices covering maintenance during current ownership.
