OVERVIEW

The Porsche 928 was designed in the mid-1970’s as a replacement for the 911, a thought almost unfathomable today. With this goal in mind, Porsche used every bit of engineering might it possessed, and the 928 was a tour de force of technological advancements for the era. Features such as the Weissach axle, which provided rear wheel steering through deflection of the rear axle, were combined with an advanced V8 powertrain to create a sporting GT without peer. The 928 platform was produced for an astonishing 18 model years, and while it never supplanted the 911, it did provide Porsche with a model of distinct quality and dignified performance.

This beautiful 928 is from the 1980 model year, which denoted a switch from Porsche’s original use of Bosch K-Jetronic, CIS fuel injection to the more sophisticated L-Jetronic. It is finished in classic India Red (later Guards Red) over a well-preserved brown full leather interior. As written in the original service handbook, the original owner was Paul Choy of Bellingham, WA. Mr. Choy sold the 928 to Roger Wheelis of Ferndale, WA in 1986 with a scant 378 miles showing, as evidenced by Mr. Wheelis’ own notes and a period odometer statement.

In 1987 the Porsche was owned by Paul Birkeland of Kirkland, WA, then showing approximately 11,700 miles. He would own the 928 until 1997, fastidiously maintaining it, as demonstrated by numerous service records in the car’s large history file. Mr. Birkeland sold the Porsche to Mike Landick of Seattle in August of 1997, with a period title showing a mileage of 52,779. Mr. Landick treated this 928 like a cherished member of the family, carefully preserving it until his death earlier this year. In his 27-year stewardship this Porsche was driven just 800 miles, carefully stored and sparingly used.

Under current ownership the 928 has received a new fuel pump, filter, injectors, and a fluid service. Proper N-rated Michelin Exalto tires developed by Michelin Classic for cars of this era were installed, as was a new battery and struts for the hood and rear hatch. The 928 runs incredibly well, and important features such as the air conditioning and climate control operate as they should, blowing both hot and cold air.

The entire car is incredibly well-preserved but has been painted at some point in the past, a fate that many India red cars met. The interior, is particularly nice, with supple leather that has clearly been well-maintained. The full-leather dashboard is in almost perfect condition, due in large part to the car’s careful storage and a custom-fitted suede dash cover that has been with the 928 since the 1980’s.

The 928 is being recognized in today’s market for all its fabulous attributes, and as an accessible and collectible Porsche. Offering tremendous value and a large range of concours and driving events for which it is eligible, this 928 is sure to please its next lucky owner.
