OVERVIEW
When the Porsche 914 was introduced to give Porsche an entry level model, it was initially offered with a 2.0L 6 cylinder as an option. When that was dropped from the line-up and 1973 came around, this 2.0L 4 cylinder was the best option in the 914 chassis. Light and well balanced, a properly set-up 914 is a treat to drive. It’s similar to a street legal go-kart, you’ll be laughing by the end of the first drive to think you can have this on the backroads.
Sold new in August 1973 at University Porsche + Audi in Seattle to a local woman, the car was enthusiastically used and enjoyed over the next 12 years. She had the car serviced at the selling dealer during this time period while accumulating around 60K miles. The original window sticker and purchase documents are included with the car from her time period.
The current owner bought the car in 1985 from her, as he worked at University Porsche + Audi in the parts department and knew the Saturn Yellow car well from when it came in for service. He has handled all maintenance and service personally during his ownership, and has kept this excellent example of a 914 in top notch condition. It is getting hard to find 914s in this condition – the cost to restore is prohibitive, and many of them have just rusted away over the years.
This 914 is one of the nicest driving and well balanced 914s we have sampled. Engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, all are dialed in to make for a very enjoyable and engaging experience. The car starts right up cold or hot, and the exhaust has a great sound at idle, and under throttle. When you add in the long-term ownership, and the overall cosmetic condition, this is a superb example of the 914 to own, drive and enjoy.
Exterior – It is almost unbelievable that the paint on this car is now 22 years old – painted in the factory shade of Saturn Yellow (L13M). There are less than a half dozen rock chips on the car after all these years. The paint prep was thorough and the paint was applied correctly. Factory cosmoline present in wheel wheels and underside of engine area. The trim and rubber are all clean and highly presentable. Lenses are in good condition all around, and H4 headlights are in place, along with upgraded fog/driving lights. Glass appears original, other than windshield, including rear heated glass.
Engine/Transmission – 2.0L engine rebuilt and tastefully upgraded. In thumbing through the file on this car (records back to 1985 with current owner), you can see a fanatical attention to detail and a collection of all the right parts from the right suppliers. J&E pistons, Performance Coatings, ARP head studs, FAT Performance, Pauter roller rocker arms, etc. Engine assembly (after machining) was handled by owner, and final evolution has led to dyno proven results – 97hp at the wheels, and 114 ft./lbs. of torque, also measured at the wheels. This places the car into 914-6 territory! Factory 901 5-speed transmission shifts excellently with correct engagement in all gears, and was recently rebuilt with a brand new clutch installed within the last 100 miles.
Interior – The interior has a wonderful vintage sports-purpose look to it. The highlight of the interior is the vintage Scheel bucket seats – they are 100% original 1970s seats, just fantastic when you see and feel them in person. Carpets are crisp, door panels and door hardware are in excellent condition, gauges are clean and in full working condition. The steering wheel shows some patina in the grip, the headliner condition is excellent, and all factory coverings are in great shape.
Shocks/Suspension/Brakes – Lowered just the right amount, rides excellent, taut yet compliant. Featuring adjustable front camber plates, 930 tie-rods, and Bilstein shocks at all four corners. Front and rear sway bars. Factory braking system is recently serviced and works correctly.
Wheels/Tires – Original factory 2.0L 15” Fuchs with older Yokohama 195/60-15 tires.
Showing 108K miles on the odometer, this 1973 Porsche 914 is offered with factory jack and lug wrench, spare wheel/tire, owner’s manual, and full records back to 1985, plus the original window sticker, and purchase documents from 1973.
