OVERVIEW
The Alfa Romeo Giulia GT, GT Junior, and GTV were part of the legendary 105/115 series coupes, and were produced in original “Step-Nose” form between 1964 and 1971. These models were based on the Giulia sedan but featured a sportier, fastback coupe design by Giorgetto Giugiaro, who was working for Bertone at the time.
The Giulia Sprint GT debuted in 1963 as the first model in the series, featuring a 1.6L twin-cam engine producing 106 hp. It was lightweight and nimble, making it a favorite for both road and racing applications. Variants followed, including the GT Veloce (GTV), introduced in 1965, which received improved interiors, mechanical refinements, and more powerful engines.
The GT Junior was launched in 1966 as a more affordable alternative, using a 1.3L engine with 89 hp. Despite its smaller displacement, it retained the handling and character of its bigger siblings. By 1969, the second series featured aesthetic and mechanical upgrades, such as a revised interior, improved suspension, and larger engines, culminating in the 1750 GTV and 2000 GTV models. Production continued until 1976, but the 1964-1971 era is often considered the golden age of Alfa Romeo’s GT lineup.
The car offered here is a 1971 GT Junior model, originally fitted with the 1,300cc engine. In the late 1990s it was owned by an enthusiast in Vancouver, BC, and was sold in 2004 to a resident of Kirkland, WA. Invoices on file show the Alfa was treated to new, restored, and uprated suspension components circa 2007 by Group 2 Motorsports in Seattle. A 4.10:1, Limited-slip differential was installed at this time, as well as coil-over suspension developed by RSRacing in The Netherlands.
Excited by the character that the upgrades brought to his GT, the owner decided to do a comprehensive restoration, and sent the Alfa to Vintage Customs, which at that time was an Alfa Romeo-only restoration facility in Auburn, WA.
The body shell was completely restored and finished in Dutch Blue with a white nose accented with a lime green pinstripe. All rubber seals were replaced, as was the windshield. The interior was finished without a back seat, a bolt-in roll bar fitted in its place over custom black carpeting. OMP low-back seats were added with tasteful corduroy inserts. The dashboard was restored and custom wood inlays were built by the car’s owner. A leather Momo Prototipo steering wheel adds the perfect interface between driver and machine.
This restoration included myriad additional upgrades, the most significant of which was the switch to a 2.0L “Twin-Spark” engine that the owner imported from Europe and then rebuilt for the purpose. These engines were never sold in the US, and they represent the ultimate iteration of the original Alfa Romeo twin-cam four cylinder. Normally fuel injected, this twin-spark was fitted with a custom intake manifold with newly produced Weber 40 DCOE carburetors.
Numerous components from Alfaholics in the UK were fitted from their extensive catalog of performance parts. These include the 4-piston big brake kit, electronic programmable ignition system, GTA-style mesh grill, full stainless exhaust system, an aluminum fuel cell, and 15” GTA-replica wheels. The previously installed RS Racing suspension was retained, now perfectly matched by the more aggressive powertrain.
Since completion this incredible hot-rod GT Junior has seen sparing use, and was only driven on nice days, sharing time with the former owner’s Giulietta Spider. In current ownership the car received extensive detailing and servicing, including new fluids and some cosmetic improvements to the engine bay.
Its strong and sporting character is highlighted by the howling induction and exhaust noise coming from the uprated engine, and it is a wonderful dual-purpose machine that would feel very at home on a race track.
The delightful and balanced 105-series Alfa Romeo chassis is the perfect basis for a build of this type. As Alfaholics has shown with their incredible GTA-R, the potential of the GTV platform is limited only by one’s imagination. Combining Italian flair and potent performance, this wonderful sports coupe awaits a new enthusiast who appreciates a big dose of excitement when venturing onto the open road.
