OVERVIEW
The Porsche 356 is iconic amongst many collectors, as it was Porsche’s first series production automobile. Construction of the first cars began in 1948 in Gmund, Austria before relocating to Germany and production ran all the way to April of 1965. Over this time, the 356 models saw evolutionary revisions and upgrades in both comfort and performance.
As Porsche was gearing up 911 series production, they pulled out all the stops for the outgoing 356 model. In addition to the “C” series updates (notably disc brakes all around), the standard engine offering was the 75hp Super engine. The 356 C provided sporting levels of performance in 1965 and remains a treat to drive today.
With a production date of September 29, 1964, the car here was sold new in Colorado to a Wallace R. Yolivette via the distributor - P.C. Southwest in San Antonio, Texas. From the known history of the car, it remained with that first owner for several years, just outside of Colorado Springs.
The current owner purchased the car from the first owner circa 1971 still in Colorado. He was driving by and saw the car on the side of the road, and circled back to talk. Soon after this first meeting, he was able to purchase the 356. From this point on, the car became an extended member of the family for numerous road trips, vacations, and even daily commuting duties from time to time over the next few decades.
The car accompanied a move to the Seattle area and continued to see use through the 1980s and 1990s with regular servicing at Aker’s Porsche in Seattle. The car was an important family member that was used, and cared for, but over the decades and miles, some wear and tear began to show on the original finishes. It was decided to give it a fresh lease on life in 2006 when it embarked on a two-year refurbishment.
This 356 C benefits from a wonderful restoration by a local marque expert that was completed in 2008. During this process, the car was painted Ruby Red (originally the car was Light Ivory) – a correct 1965 color. The body panels are all very straight with decent gaps throughout, and only a handful of minor blemishes from storage. The trim and rubber are all clean and highly presentable while all lenses are free from cracks or major flaws, and all glass is crisp and clean. Receipts from the restoration exceed $70K in 2008.
The interior was fully refurbished in Brown Tan leather, and all new weather-stripping, felt seals, window channels, etc. were fitted during the restoration. Square weave carpets are crisp, door panels and door hardware are in excellent condition, gauges are clean and in full working condition. The painted dash is in excellent condition, and brings a smile when you slide into the driver’s seat.
The front trunk area is tidy and fresh with the plastic liner in great condition, with a date coded (3/64) spare wheel/tire, and the the original jack. A newer battery (6V) was recently fitted during recent maintenance per records.
Driving this car is a delight – it is fully sorted and ready for weekend touring. The 4-speed manual transmission shifts smoothly and precisely, and the brakes engage with purpose and stop the car with no pulling. It sits on Porsche steel 15” wheels in chrome finish with original hubcaps, with Vredestein Sprint Classic 165R15 tires.
The engine starts easily cold or warm and emits no smoke. The engine pulls smoothly through the rev range, with no hesitation, or hiccups. A full fluid exchange and general tune-up were completed in preparation for sale, and the car drives wonderfully today. The car shows just over 85K miles, which are understood to be original.
This is a wonderful Porsche 356 to add to your garage that is sorted for weekend driving or participating in the local car shows. Offered with the factory Kartex, documentation folder, select period photographs, spare, factory jack, and will be sold on a clean and clear WA title.
