OVERVIEW
The Mercedes-Benz 190SL debuted at the 1954 New York Auto Show announcing to the world that performance and luxury would now be offered in a range of vehicles. Positioned on the same stage as the impressive 300SL Gullwing, the 190SL presented as a beautiful and affordable way to enjoy Mercedes quality and refinement in a sporty convertible. Inspired by US distributor and European importer Max Hoffman, the 190SL positioned Mercedes-Benz as a luxury-sport brand specifically aimed at growing North American markets. And, with its modest $4000 price point, the 190SL was an attractive value for young couples as well as aspiring singles. The 1900cc SOHC engine with twin Solex carburetors coupled to the 4-speed transmission, delivered spirited performance and fine handling via double-wishbone coil spring front suspension and swing axle coil spring rear suspension. Today, the 190SL has become a highly desirable collectable for the same reasons when new, offering stylish good looks, in a convertible configuration with delightful performance manners.
This restored example is one of 4,032 originally built for 1956 production. The current owner purchased this car in 2015 from a large collection in Arizona which contained many top-level Mercedes-Benz cars including a 300SL gullwing and other later series SLs. Under current ownership the car has benefitted from services at Mercedes Benz Seattle and other local independent service centers specializing in vintage cars. Under previous ownership a pair of Weber carburetors were properly installed, retaining the correct-type engine accessories, and preserving the original Solex carburetors. The Weber performance upgrade delivers additional power to the capable engine and should the purist wish to return to the original Solex carburetors, they are included with the car.
Today this 190SL presents as a well-prepared example of a mature restoration that has been sorted and continuously maintained. Presented with the removable factory hardtop, the smooth, glossy red paint has been beautifully applied to the body surfaces, door jambs, and under hood areas. Inner body color surfaces are also very consistent showing excellent fit and finish around the perimeter folded metal panel lines and inner edges. The doors shut very well, retaining very good panel gaps with crisp latching and smooth release. The hood exhibits very good fit and tight closure with consistent gaps, a challenging detail often missed on restored cars. The chrome throughout is in very good condition, with nice luster and bright reflections. All lenses, lighting, and glass are in very good condition including the distinctive script lettering and unique taillights. The elegant yet sporting theme of the 190SL is enhanced with white wall tires and correctly painted and polished wheel covers.
The interior features a nice combination of Mercedes-Benz finishes and handsome interior refinement. The leather seats are beautifully softened by moderate use offering a pleasant, settled appearance. The dash appears to be very thoughtfully preserved displaying likely original instruments, excellent bezels, and refined detailing, topped with padded black material extending the length of the dashboard. The interior door panels, armrests, and various trim are all in very good condition matching the condition of the seats and dashboard. The carpet is in excellent condition, likely more recently replaced using proper style weave. A contemporary aftermarket under dash stereo unit has been installed with a set or Pioneer speakers mounted discreetly into the rear bulkhead using satin black screens. The optional hardtop reveals a new headliner, sun visors, and surrounding trim, all in excellent condition, finished in matching red paint. The black soft top features a large plastic rear window with excellent overall finishes inside and out indicative of minimal use since it was restored.
The engine compartment is nicely restored with correct original features and excellent presentation. The original Solex carburetors have been retained as spare units and the car is outfitted with twin Weber carburetors, which enhance overall performance. Attention to correct lines, hoses, and electrical, as well as correct factory markings and labels is evident throughout the engine compartment. Correct Mercedes-Benz parts have been used whenever possible. The inner fenders, cowl, and delicate heater boxes are all correctly finished. Of importance to collectors and sustained value, build plates and body number stampings are all evident and correct per factory literature and Mercedes-Benz 190SL references for these cars. The trunk compartment is clean and properly finished with a correct floor mat and matching sized tire.
The car is accompanied by an owner’s manual and service book, an original jack, a full sized spare tire, a matching black convertible top boot cover, and the factory hard top on a stand.
This is a wonderful opportunity to acquire a nicely restored 190SL boasting excellent cosmetic finishes. Ready for touring events or local shows, this 190SL captures all the enjoyment and driving pleasure that only a classic Mercedes-Benz can deliver.
